How can you determine the aspect ratio of a movie?

Divide the horizontal pixels by the vertical pixels of the VIEWABLE film image, no black bars.
You may have a problem when the movie is encoded specifically for ntsc or pal though. Usually though, it's pretty obvious with as to whether it's 1.33:1 (4:3), 1.85:1 (16:9) or 2.35:1 (theatrical widescreen)
