  1. Hi, I'm new to this vcd stuff. I read somewhere, that the less compressed the source file is (avi), the better the mpeg file turns out. now what I want to know is, without taking up 20 gigs + to convert a dvd rip, to avi, what codec should I use to convert to avi, without using up a bunch of space, and still get a decent quality mpeg out of it?

You mentioned DVD rip. This implies that you have ripped a DVD video to your hard drive already. Presuming this is the case, the most ideal situation would be to use something like FlaskMPEG or Xmpeg to convert directly to MPEG using the bbMpeg tools (or alternatively frame serving off to Tmpgenc or whatever your preferred MPEG encoder is).

If you are capturing in real time from an outside source (ie a DVD player to a capture board), then something like an MJPEG codec may suit you - it's lossy, but you can get decent quality at something like 8GB/hr (perhaps I'm wrong here - I haven't done any capturing in a long time. It may take more space than that to get good quality). It's usually a bad idea to capture real time video w/ any codec that uses some kind of temporal compression techniques, such as MPEG, H.263, or DivX codecs.

  3. Yes, I did rip the dvd to my HD. thanks, I tried flask mpeg, but output mpeg video is a bit on the choppy side.
