  1. I have been following the guides to try and convert an asf to mpg. I have had success with converting the video and audio seperately using virtualdub1.3c and TMPGE. Once i combine the audio and video streams in TMPGE (asf video, wav audio), the resulting mpg file has occasional spikes in the audio where it flashes some green blocks on the screen and makes a chirping sound. The asf does not have this audio problem though. any ideas?

You might like to try Graph edit, it will convert ASF or others to AVI, its not that difficult to use.

So why wont TMPGEnc work, it will convert ASF files.

  5. TMPGE will work but the audio has weird chirps/spikes in it when it is converted straight from asf to mpg. other than that the video is fine.

Oh, so it did convert then. Maybe your MPEG-4 V3 codec is loacked, have you installed the Nimo codec pack?

If you now have it as an Mpeg, you can extract the sound and perhaps fix the problem. Did you try GraphEdit ?, is the sync ok ?

    I wish you GOODLUCK
I have tackled this asf - mpg problem just recently. But, please, do not
ask about it as I canned the whole project. Too much time away from family and a CD-RW that WAS my backup for all of my programs was
wiped clean. It is a long story. I may try it again after the kids go back
to school but it may never happen.

BTW: I did the Graphedit conversion. I thought I would never figure
it out but if you do a search in the forum here for a user by the name
of kenetik there is an EXCELLENT guide for using GraphEdit to convert
an asf to avi. It worked for me. Just watch out for some subtle
graphic/picture quality changes. One spot in the asf was working on had
a spot of something "Red Hot". In the asf it was fine but the GraphEdit
converted file had some "Blue" right in the middle of the hot spot.
(The hot spot was a sword against a steel cape in the movie I have).

    Oh well, Goodluck anyways.

  8. so i tried graphedit but the avi could not be loaded into tmpgenc or virtual dub. I then converted the asf to an mpg using graphedit but the audio video was out of sync. the audio it turned out was now 1 second longer and the audio got progressively out of sync in the mpg. so i cut the wav to the exact time of the movie and had it redone. no luck with that. thanks for all the advice, i guess i'll just keep trying. god how I HATE ASF!!!!!!!!

Graphedit, for those who dont know.

    1) Use the File->RenderFile menu option to load in a file.

    2) Remove the last two "filters" (or software components) from the graph. These default to your sound card driver and your video card driver. We don't want that, we want to convert to a different file format.

    AVI

    1) Use the File->RenderFile option and choose your ASF file (can use WMV, etc)

    2) The default graph is built for you

    3) Delete any filters after (but not including) the Windows Media Audio Decoder filter

    4) Delete any filters after (but not including) the ASF ICM Handler filter

Insert a new filter (Graph->InsertFilters) called "AVI Mux" from the DirectShow filters section

    5) Link the ASF ACM Out to XForm In of Windows Media Audio Decoder

    6) Link XForm Out of Windows Media Audio Decoder to Input 1 of AVI Mux

    7) Link ASF ICM Out to Input 2 of AVI Mux.

    8) Insert a new filter called "File writer" from DirectShow section and choose a file name

    9) Link the AVI Out of AVI Mux to the In of your file writer

    10) Right-click the AVI Mux filter and choose Properties

    11) Choose the Full option of the Interleaving section and click OK (this makes the sound and video match up and is the whole point of the AVI format)

    10) Press the play button

    11) Wait until the play button is active again - this means the thing is finished (you can right-click on AVI Mux and look at the Current Position and Duration count to see how far in seconds the conversion has progressed during the conversion)
