  1. Anyone interested in working with me on creating an open source AV system.
The intent is to create a system with the following base features
    Software:
    Compression-MPEG1/2/4
    Decoding- MPEG1/2/4
    Real time MEPG1/2 encoding
    Real time MPEG1/2/4 decoding
    Simultaneous MPEG2 encode decode (PVR)
    Non-windows OS
    OpenGL compatible for gaming
    Hardware:
    Athlon CPU 1500+
    256 meg DDR
    CD-RW drive
    DVD drive
    40 gig hard drive
    3D graphics card
    TV out(S-Video and composite), SVGA
    Form factor:
Must fit in space of normal AV component
1 set AV inputs front and back
    1394 front and back
    Operator interface
    Remote control
Anyone interested let me know your ideas and lets get started.

  2. Sounds interesting. It seems like you need quite a big team...

  3. Well hopefully it will not be as much work as it sounds like at first glance.

The plan I have in mind is to use a Linix OS variant. Some claim to be able to support windows programs.

Then the standard bundled playback software with the DVD
DVD DVDR CD VCD SVCD Photodisk
Then the standard bundled recording software with the CD-RW
    audio CD, VCD, SVCD, XSVCD
Add a Graphics (either card or built into the mother board) with it TV in and out bundled software
    PVR and 3D gaming.
Then the freeware and shareware can provide the following features.
    Divx MPEG4 compression and playback
    VCDeasy VCD SVCD etc
virtualdub1394 DV capture editing and recording
    MP3 stuff
Most of the software work will be checking compatibility, taking care of instant power on and working out the user interface issues.
Finding the correct format box to put it all in a AV slot will probably be a big issue.
If anyone has feedback I would be glad to start listening.

  4. I just ran across a chip announced in EE times today that claims to do real time compression and decompression of MPEG1,2,4. It is suppose to off load the work from the PC at a bargain basement price. They claim that they have drivers for multiple OS. What I don’t know is what the quality is really suppose to be. Can someone look at their data sheet and give me some feedback. Here is the link to the data sheet

And here is the link to their site

Here is my systems requirements question of the day. Do we need a TV tuner in the system or can we get along without it.

  6. It looks like Lindows will work for the OS. It looks to have all the supporting software that is needed. I will continue checking for compatibility issues. Please look them over at www.lindows.com

I have found one mother board in the flex ATX form factor that lools like it might work. I do not know if the built in graphics is good enough. I have posted the mother board spec at
    http://www.nitchville.com/shuttle%20fs40.htm

I will try and get all the information structured and published in the near future until then please just use the links in the messages.

Please give me some feedback on the OS and the graphics/
