I'm still unsure about the final verdict about the vcd header trick, to me the tricked svcd looked slightly better.
But anyway, can the same trick be applied to a CVD?
If I try and play a CVD burnt as an uncomplient SVCD my Panasonic just craps out, sound distorts and then video drops out.

I use the VCD header trick for all my SVCD/CVDs, and they play fine. Remember, all the header trick does is tell the DVD player that its an MPEG1 file, not MPEG2. I can't state this as a fact, but it seems logical that if your player can play an SVCD with MPEG1 headers, then it should be able to play a CVD with MPEG1 headers. I can get them to play on my Sony DVP-NS400D.
