  1. My old Apex 703 finally died (water damage from a flood one year ago). Based on the users here, I bought a $109 GE 1101P at Wal-Mart yesterday. I haven't done the firmware upgrade, yet.

It takes most comercial DVDs, and homemade VCDs and SVCDs (I'll test it with some Indian VCDs later tonight) and it seems to work fine.

However, it's giving me playback problems with some cheap DVDs I bought. These are "pressed" DVDs, not burned: Godzilla vs. Megalon and Gappa: The Triphibian Monsters. The first one took two tries before it played, and the second will play an opening animation and then it freezes. Sometimes it makes it to the menus, sometimes not. The Godzilla DVD acted up a bit, but finally played.

The Gappa DVD is a CHEAP item put out by a company called Tokyo Shock. Do I have a bad DVD, or does the GE 1101P have problems with cheaper DVDs? That could be a major problem for me because about half the stuff I watch is bad movies on cheap DVDs.

Anybody else have similar problems, or have suggestions?

PS: I don't know if this matters, but the problematic GAPPA DVD is an odd yellow/gold color. It's not the same cool gold as my other gold DVDs; this one has a definite yellow tint to it.

  3. The discs are, I believe, not Region Coded. Neither one has the Region symbol on it. These discs are both made by companies in America, by the way. The Godzilla DVD is by Alpha Video in Pennsylvania. Tokyo Shock is a division of Media-Blasters in New York.

  4. I am going to return the DVD to the manufacturer for a replacement. If that works, then we'll know it was just a bad disc.
