  1. First off, sorry this post is so long. I dunno how else to convey some info that MIGHT help someone solve a problem that MAYBE someone else is also having...

So I just got a new SV25 (Small Form Factor) computer, added a 1G P3, 512 RAM, 80GB Seagate (formatted in NTFS), ATI AIW Radeon, a snazzy new Pioneer DVR-104, with everything under a one month old licensed W2K.

Put it all together this weekend. All is right with the world, except when I try to burn a DVD. Ripped "Thema and Louise" with Smart Ripper, ended up witha 4.3 GB file. Using Nero 5.5.8.2, downloaded from their site a few days ago. Nero finds and IDs the drive fine. Nero burns CDs just dandy. But when trying to make a DVD, I get a weird "Unexpected Exception" and "Scsi not using temporary buffers" error. Using the Nero DVD option, I dragged and dropped the files to the correct directory in CAPS, hit burn, and about 2 seconds later it errors out. Then the durn program asks me if its OKAY! Hell no, it ain't okay...

Anyhow, if anyone has been thru this b4, would appreciate a fix. I can't believe that with all the users of this device I am the first person to go thru this...course then again maybe I'm just dim...

Below find the error log that Nero generates:

Note that DMA is ON. I've tried it both ways, with the same results. I also un-installed the DVR-104, un-installed SCSI devices in Device Manager, etc etc. No difference.

  2. You are not alone, I too get the "Unexpected Exception" error using Nero and the Pioneer. I wish I had a fix for it, I use Prassi instead and that works fine, but it doesnt have half the options and ease as Nero.

  3. Hi,

I have a A04, I can't burn DVDs in DVD-Video compilation, I got "relocation error" even before burning begins, I just can in DVD-ISO/UDF compilation.
    Use this guide to burn:
    http://mpucoder.kewlhair.com/Derrow/nero.html
Pay attention to the ISO settings.

I don't know why it happens, but Nero is better than other tools, with bundled tools I can't erase a DVD-RW, with Nero I can.

    Regards

I enabled DMA option for IDE channel with A04 on it in BIOS and immedialtely started to get "Communication error" messages from Nero. I disabled DMA in BIOS (note: Windows still says Multi-word DMA mode 2) and everything works again. Strange but this is true.

    May be this will help...

  5. Hey I am glad to hear that others are having the same problem, trying to burn a dvd in (dvd video mode)with Nero 5.82.It says (unexpected error) and aborts the writing, the strange thing is it will work with dvd-rws but not with dvd-rs,I have tried several brands.I can burn the dvds in udf-iso format but my( power dvd) on my computer will not play them it says that it is an unsupported format. They play fine in my 2 dvd players,Apex-1500 and Pioneer 414.I wonder if this problem is only afecting the Pioneer A04 as that is what I have.Try it with a dvd-rw and let me know if it works for you.Tried uninstalling Nero and reinstalling,No go.Hope somebody comes up with a solution. I think i will try the disable dma trick.

I wish I had read this post a while back. I was getting the same error and thought the drive was faulty so I RMA'd the thing. I got my new drive back today and get the same errors (communications error). It doesn't matter which software package I use (NERO5582 or STOMP RecordNOW). It would error out durning the burn process (CD's / DVD's).

I put the drive in PIO mode through the Device MGR. and now it burns just fine (really bogs down the system though).

I think I'll try turning it off in BIOS and see if it shows DMA mode in the device MGR like yours.

It kind of sounds like a firmware upgrade may be needed to be compatiable with some rigs.

I'm running a KG7 (VIA686B Southbridge) but never had any problems before. What board is your DVR connected to?

As per "FM"'s posting I found that disabling UltraDMA mode for that channel in BIOS told windows XP to place the drive into Multi-Word DMA 2 mode. It works perfect now.

Thanks FM. I guess the drive is only Multi-Word DMA 2 capable and NOT UltraDMA ready. Seems strange for a new drive though.

I still think a firmware upgrade is needed, and may correct the problem.

  8. I've seen this issue also. I was able to write to DVD-RW but not DVD-R. I created a Video disk on DVD-RW and then used Nero's DVD-Copy function to copy the disk to DVD-R. Of course dropping it down to EDMA is no problem since the transfer rate really doesn't need to have UDMA.

I've been having the exact same problem. Same drive, Same Nero version. I tried slowing down the drive to PIO and I still got the "Unexpected exception" error. I did the DVD-RW burn and then DVD copied it to DVD-R, which worked, but it will not play on my JVC XV_S65GD player. I'm going to Circuit City today to see if the DVD-R will play on any of their showroom DVD players. Has anybody contacted Nero about this error so they can include a fix for this on their next version?
