I own a Toshiba SD5109 progressive DVD player. It was a fairly expensive player in its day and I thing highly of it and have no desire to get rid of it (if you have ever seen a progressive DVD play on a digital TV at 480p then you understand).
But this SD5109 is useless for playing anything recordable... be it CD-R or CD-RW (I can get a VCD to at least recognize but play real jerky on some brands of CD-RW). I also read on many forums/sites that DVD-R does NOT play on the SD5109 either (this of course did not surprise me).
I read on www.dvdplusrw.org that the SD 5109 did in fact work with both DVD+RW/+R but I learn to believe it when I see it.
I bought the HP dvd200i yesterday and burned my first DVD Video using the included Sonic MyDVD. I tried it in the SD5109 and it came up with Disc Error. So then I used the included HP compatibility tool and changed the +RW to mode2 and voila... works no problem. Next I tried a DVD+R and it also worked in the Toshiba SD5109!
Now what is my point you ask? Well I am not implying that DVD+RW/+R is superior to DVD-R/-RW (I am not qualified to make that assumption, nor do I have experience) but it seems possible that DVD+R works in some drives that DVD-R doesn't and vice-versa. It could be possible for a biased reviewer to stack the selection of drives in favor of the particular DVD-recordable format he/she prefers!
I could be wrong on the SD5109 and DVD-R compatibilty - someone please correct me if it DVD-R does in fact work. I base my information that it does not work when I was researching to buy a Pioneer A03 last year - I had read many reports that it did not so that was enough excuse for me not to get into DVD recording at that time.

I would expect that some machines that do not support DVD-R will support DVD+R, but I also think that slightly more will support DVD-R.
As for your Toshiba, DVD-R is supported. See here. DVD-RW is not however, and maybe that's where the confusion came from. -
Eug, thank you for showing me that DVD-R works on my Toshiba SD5109. It is good to know this. Maybe I shoulda researched more current news before posting - was just excited about something working in my SD5109!
I notice that it is reported that maybe some brands of DVD-R may not be as good as others... could be same situation for DVD+RW/+R too!
What was the other format called that preceded DVD-R general format? It was a professional format and the recorder was $4000+ - maybe that is what I read did not work in my SD5109.
From what I read and understand, DVD+RW is more compatible than the DVD-RW counterpart, but in the future most new consumer DVD players should support DVD-RW playback. -

Kusanagi,
That statement you quote me as incorrect is my own opinion and it is not a direct quote that from www.dvdplusrw.org, although it may sound like something you read there maybe! Note I was comparing it to DVD-RW and not to DVD-R. I have read much lately that DVD-RW is not nearly as compatible as DVD-R so I presume that DVD+RW would sit somewhere in between and therefore be more compatible than DVD-RW, but less compatible than DVD-R.
That FAQ site you gave me actually tells me to go www.dvdplusrw.org for more information on DVD+RW - go figure eh!
Who knows what DVD+R will be, but all I know is I submitted an e-mail to the person maintaining the compatibilty list found at www.dvdplusrw.org to add the Toshiba SD 5109 and he added it within a day. From my brief experience they seem to be an ok site so far.
I understand that the entire DVD+RW media was supposed to offer superior compatibility and reliability than DVD-R, but it was a letdown and found to be not as compatible... maybe that is why MS likes em - they are on the same wave-length -

I would not be surprised to find out that DVDplusRW.org is actually run and funded by the +RW alliance.

Who has set up this website? -
Please stop Kenny, it is beyond annoying now. Links to just DVDplusRW.org make your rebuttals even less credible.
And stop bumping old threads just to promote your DVDplusRW.org cause.

The truth is just there for all the world to see.
Still no?
You contine to insist on fighting when there is nothing to even fight about. Again, get off it and relax.
I've had enough of this DVDplusRW.org and its propaganda now. I'm done commenting on it.

Ragging and saying how bad dvdplusrw.org's site misleads information doesn't really prove that DVD-R is superior to DVD+R. What we really need is RELIABLE REVIEWS that show which format is more compatible than the other . Also, whether one is "the industry standard" doesn't automatically prove one format is compatible than the other, and can also go the same with with Mt. Rainer support from Microsoft. What we need is thorough head to head tests. I have one here from zdnet, which I doubt whoever wrote the article is a "+RW propagandist"...
http://www.zdnet.com/products/stories/reviews/0,4161,2868531,00.html
To sum it up, we need more time. All this DVD+R and DVD-R bashing is useless and doesn't prove anything. Dvdplusrw.org may have some misleading information (basically how the first generation drives can't burn +R) but all the bashers don't really see all the SUCCESS stories from that site. Just ask Eug he posts there all the time and he owns a DVD-R drive. He brings out the best of DVD+R because he points all the weaknesses and strengths it possess and is open to new formats.
So, basically stop the FLAME WARS!
