  1. Hello!

    i use the Divx 5-Codec now first time and have some problems.

    My with Divx 5.02 Standard encoded Files are 20% bigger than that ones i encoded with V3.11 or 4.12. I think they have to be much smaller! I use VirtualDub 1.4.10 and my settings are 1pass or 1pass-quality based.

    => Why are the files so big?

    I tested some other settings without result. And I tried the Pro-Version of Divx 5.02, but the files are now bigger than before. I dont know what is wrong.

    => Which settings are recommended?

    I hope somebody understands my english and can help me.

    You will get much better results using a 2-pass method, both with quality and final size prediction. Check out www.svcd.cc/divx. It uses a method based around Gordian Knot, which consistently gives me results within 3-4 MB of my chosen filesize.

  3. The Link you've posted is incomplete, so I searched on www.svcd.cc on my own, but haven't found the recommended instructions for the Gordian-Knot-Method.

    I've tried to convert files with 2-pass-method in Divx 4.12 *). The result is: the new file is a little bit bigger then the Original-Testfile (Divx 4 low V3) and much bigger than a "1-pass quality" Version.

    => I understand you right, that the new file becomes with 2-pass-method a smaller size at the same (or better) quality ?

    bye TIDALIX

    *) The reason for testing with Divx4.12 is that the Divx5 codec deletes the 4.12 when is installed and when I reinstall the old, it deletes the Divx5 at the same way. Now 4.12 is on my system.

  4. I have now converted Testfiles from Divx4 low V3 to all known variable Bitrate Modes in Divx4.12 and Divx5.02:
    - 1 pass
    - 1 pass, quality based
    - 2 pass

    In the past the 1pass-quality-method made the the smallest files. Now the with Divx5.02 converted file they are much bigger.

    With the other methods, 1pass and 2pass, the Divx5.02-files are smaller than the compared 4.12-files. But with 2pass the results have the same size as the 1pass-files.

    => But its still the question: What are the pros of the 2pass-method? The size is the same.
