  1. For some reason I can't write to a CD-RW. This is the first time I have tried it on this computer. I put the newly opened CD into the Burner (which specifically says on the front "ReWritable") and it takes about 30 seconds just for the rom to pick up that there is a CD in to burner. When I actually do try to burn it says that this is not a CD-RW and spits it out. I have tried several programs. Please help.

  2. Okay, we need to know more. Answer these questions:

What brand of CD-RW drive do you have? If it came as part of a computer you purchased as a package (say, from Wal-Mart) what's the brand of the computer? Include the speeds for the drive - like 8X4X32 or whatever the drive/literature claims it is.

What brand of burning programs have you tried to use?

If you can't burn CD-RW's, can you burn regular CD-R's with the same system and CD-RW drive? Or are you unable to burn anything?

Without any more knowledge, there is one thing I know. Most CD burning programs such as Nero need to open up the Windows registry and write to it. If you're logging onto a system and don't have administrator status on it, you will be unable to open the CD burning program, since it can't write to the registry for non-administrators. (Had this problem when using a friend's computer.)

sounds like it may be a bad disc. have you tried more than one RW disc?
I had this problem with a spindle of memorex rw's I bought...7 of 25 were bad--the bad ones did exactly what you described above.

  4. The burner is an HP 8x4x32 and it came with the computer. I can write cd-r's just fine. Im using memorex 1x-4x compatable and I have trie to write at 2 and 1x speeds. I have tried 2 of the five discs I bought and neither on of the work. Ive used Nero and Clone CD to try and burn and I get the same result. Hope this helps.

sounds like exactly what I went through. try all of the discs--you might even find one or two that actually work. if you do find one or two...that means the other ones are bad, and then send memorex a nasty email about the fact that their products are crap, and they will probably apologize and send you new discs. if none of them work, make sure you have the latest version of all the authoring tools, and make sure you have the latest firmware installed for the drive.

I agree with fantomlord, Memorex disc's are crap. I bought a 10pack of 700MB RW awhile back (only because I couldn't find any other brands of 700MB) and 3 of the 10 didn't work at all. I wouldn't trust Memorex disc's to sit my coffee cup on, let alone store data.

I took them back, got my $$ back and luckily found some TDK's. Haven't had a problem with a single one.
