  1. My original source file is 783 MB and when burned onto a CD, the file is 793 MB. What is the reason for that? Thanks.

    That's normal.
A DAT (the mpeg at (s)vcd) is the MPeG + some CD CRC-checking codes.

  3. So it's not necessary to save the original mpg file? If not, then i've been wasting a lot of discs, but to make myself feel better, it's so that if one of the CD breaks, i'll have a copy!

    No,
As soon you've tested the burned (S)VCD -- test it in your standalone DVD player at your TV, or at your PC in a DVD-player - you can delete the original MPeG from your PC.

In the future, whenever you want to have a copy of the MPeG (originally it's a DAT), then use tools like webFlix or VCDgear to convert the DAT to MPeG again.

  5. Thanks, one thing though, I just checked an (S)VCD that I made and the file itself is already an MPG, so there's no need to convert. I was just wondering when it's a DAT? Thanks...

its a Dat file if its VCD, SVCD has the file extension .mpg, but it still need to be converted to a proper mpeg file, before you can use it properly.

If you want to edit or re-encode the mpeg then you need to put it through VCD Gear which is a small and easy program to use, you should be able to work it out if you need to use it, if its a VCD file then use the convert Dat to Mpeg option and if its a SVCD use the mpeg to mpeg option.
