Ah.... The Studio PCTV, bane of my existence.
I'm had some odd issues with the Studio program and haven't touched it in months, electing to use VideoFactory 2. If you get the chance, you can download the demo at sonicfoundry.com. IMO, it works great in concert with Virtualdub and my PCTVPro card. Does just about everything that Studio PCTV does with exception of scene detect, sadly.
I recall something similar to you in months past with StudioPCTV Pro and IIRC, I ended up doing a total uninstall on the program and a reinstall. IIRC, I think I was tracing my problem to a video file that was somehow 'screwy' and Studio was always locking up the moment the program opened (since I guess it's also opening up the video file at the same time). Oddly enough, I think I ended up un-/re-installing PCTV Studio about 4 times in the first year I had it. The patch on their site didn't seem to do much for me. IIRC, it claimed to fix a VCD-format MPEG problem that I noticed still existed afterwards; cutting off the last few seconds of any project.
As for Virtualdub, I think under File you'd select Capture AVI. If you have any problems beyond that point I found by making sure that the Video>Format was set to 352X240 fixes things up for my card. Also, I've found that in order to use Vdub with my PCTVPro, I have to actually run the PCTV Vision program first for just a few seconds and close it down again in order to 'activate' it (for lack of a better term) for Vdub to be able to start capturing from it. In order to change channels for capture, I have to shut down the capture function in Vdub, go to PCTV Vision, change the channel, close it down, then go back to Vdub. -
I'm using the older V4.02a VFW drivers (Using Windows 98 1st Ed.),from Pinnacle's site, & I've had no major problems capturing 640x480. But you have to turn off overlay & turn on preview, & select Hide on capture.
What version drivers are you guys using, don't the later WDM drivers prevent you from using Virtual Dub for capture? -
I'm using the BTWINCAP drivers which appear to be far superior to the Pinnacle drivers. However, these will not work with the PCTV Vision software, but they work just fine with the studio software (upgrade). Since Vdub does not have a tuner, you always have to "prime" the card with something that has a tuner like Power VCR or another.
I am having a sound problem with Vdub right now. Sound works in all other capture programs that i have tried. I am also gettin some stuttering on the higher quality (480x480) resolution catures. I have a P4 1.6 with a 7200 RPM HD so I think I have the power. I am going to try Tweak XP to see if I can get some improved disk speed.
Pinnacle is difficult to work with, but it is a little hard to complain about it given the old deal at Compusa...
