ok, i know you guys are busy and all that but i have searched the search engine and cant find it so i am going to ask it.
How do i find out which codec is used w/ a video.
I am not having a problem w/ codecs or movies not playing, I just want to know is there a simple way to find out what a film has been encoded with.
thanks

usually you can right click the file and goto properties and click summary. it should tell the codec. if you are talking mpeg-1 VS mpeg-2 then you will know when you try and play it. mpeg-1 will play in just about anything. mpeg-2 will not, usually only software DVD players will play them

lol, with an AVI file right click it and go to properties, then the 'Details' tab and it should be in there after the 'Video Format:' thing

thanks guys but thats not always the case
they are very few and far between that i find that actually list the encoding of the file
i am looking for a program or something that can read the video file and tell me which codecs were used and the bitrates etc...
thanks -
http://www.divx-digest.com/software/movietype.html
look what i just found!!!!
and it works pretty damn good too!
I am sooooo happy now heheh
it doesnt get the bitrate and such but it does get the codec type, which is all i was asking for -
Try to use 'MPEGProperties' in the Tools section for the bitrate, but with the codecs im not sure maybe there will be a difference in MPG-1 properties than MPG-2?
