I think somebody else can give you a better answer, but this'll tide you over untill some else does. In Virtual Dub, at least, this mode means that you can edit out parts of the movie and then save it in the exact same format and file without re-encoding. It might mean it copies the .vob file exactly without making any changes. You'll have to see for yourself.
