Yes, you have to convert the file to an mpg. You can make it into a vcd, svcd or whatever you want. It will just depend on your dvd player and what it is compatible with. check the compatibility list on the left for your stand alone dvd player.
you can use TMPGENC to convert your avi to mpg... there are other programs that will do the same thing too. -
thanx for the advice ,my dvd will play mpgs but it takes so long to convert, the file is 600+ megs ,so what size will it be after conversion and will it fit on to cd ? i'm converting 1 now and it's been going for a few hours and only half way through so i will have to wait and see

Encoding is slow and very CPU dependant. But the settings you use also make a big difference. Motion search set to high, resolution, 2pass VBR, bitrate, etc. etc. I've got a Tbird 1.2Ghz and it takes 1.3-8.4x the runtime of the video source depending on what settings I use. I think if I set everything as fast as possible it's like 0.7x the runtime but the quaility really takes a hit
For a standard VCD 1min=10MB. So a 74min CDR will hold 74min of video or 740MB. An 80min CDR will hold 80min of video or 800MB.
For xVCD/SVCD take a look at the bitrate calculators under Tools (on the links to the left). -
thanx again,, so no matter how big a file is in mb you can still burn it as long as it is 800mb or less yes??

The size of the source file doesn't matter. The MPEG1 file will be 1min=10MB. So yes if your MPEG1 file is less than 800MB it'll fit on an 80min CDR (actually it's like 796MB).
That's with the standard VCD template. If you want to make an xVCD or SVCD use one of the bitrate calculators (look under Tools on the left) and enter the number of discs, movie length, audio quaility, etc. You have to encode with either CBR (constant bitrate) or 2pass VBR (variable bitrate) for the calculators to work.
If anyone can explain how CQ_VBR works (size wise) you can try that too. To hit and miss for me
