hi guys
i have just downloaded some movie files off irc. However these files are in avi format and are only 120mb size. The film iam talking about is resident evil. I have been trying to see if i can increase the quality of this movie by converting it to a vcd using nero V5. This thing does it all for you. It doesnt make the quality any better though. At full screen you can hardly make out writting and faces are blured. I always have to watch on a little box on my desktop. is there any way i can convert these files to a good resoloution so that i may watch them full screen with good quality.
cheers

You can try to use Virtual Dub to resize and add some filters to sharp image but there are no miracles!!!
RULE:
If source is bad -> target canīt get a lot better!
If source is good -> you can try to make the target look like the source or you can just get it worse!
Simple...Next time, instead of getting those files by IRC, try to get CABLE connection and rip full res divx
(Note: after that, when available, get original DVDs/VHS, donīt do piracy...)

i now have virtual dub, what filters would you suggest i use to try and gain better quality and size of picture. The film doesnt have to play at full screen. i would like it to but if there is no way in hell of doing it then ill settle for something smaller than full screen but bigger than the tiny box. i get when i use windows media payer or real player.
cheers

Low size = bad quality.
I try to only download files that are over 700mbs nothing less. Guess the quality is pretty good, good for me should be good for you. -
There's no way a reencoded file will have more detail than the source. You may sharpen the picture (little too much sharpening looks uglier than a blurred image) or use color correction.
If that's still too bad then like mickboss and Gravity wrote:

I think its obvious that you have a Cam copy of a movie.
Your never gona get good quality out of that.
You'll have to go up to the DVD rip ,DivX copies which are in the 700mb range in order to get anything worth converting to VCd"Today is only yesterdays tomorrow" -
With videos having dark footage and also containing blocks, you can use VirtualDub level filter to darken the image and frameserve it to Tmpgenc.
This covers up some blocks, providing a slight (5%-10%) image improvement.
