i just converted a movie, and it's res was 512*384. will it work with VCD? i used tmpgenc to encode it into mpg.

It may.
The numbers are valid multiples of 16 but some players will only acept certain resolutions.
Why the weird numbers?
try 352x480
or do as I do and do my vcd's with VBR and 720x480
