hi
Have made MPEG files using tmpeg and they seem ok, when I play the files in any suitable player they play ok.
but I have tried making a DVD-R using the ulead progs and even without cchapters as the film goes on the audio gets out of sync.
anyone got any ideas as to why?

Check Ulead's website. There are patches for all of their applications, including one for the audio out of sync issue. This is a well known problem and the patch corrects this for you.

I had the same problem with svcd using VideoStudio 6. The update patch which has been mentioned before, is for the Movie Factory program. VideoStudio 6 has not any update patch.
I asked the Ulead support for help and they don't have any idea in order to solve this problem. I guess that the problem is in the burning process because in the Windows Media player the movie is played O.K.
