  1. Hello,

I am 100% beginner, knowing absolute zero about video on computers, other than video format/resolution sizes (720p, 1080p, etc) & popular words like CD, DVD & Buray. But that is it.
I am attracted to restoring and upscaling old videos as I am a lover of detail, high standards and luscious colour. I have a lot of free and alone time.

However, I know I am not technically minded as I went through a few psychometric tests many years ago to try to become a computer technician and I failed the test every time. I have trouble with abstract things sometimes too.

So my question is, is it possible for someone like me able to work on videos on computer, to do what I would like to do?
If so, where would you suggest I start?

    1. You must have the necessary hardware(PC(at least a Mac or Windows 10), Camcorder, Smartphone etc)
    2. How to get the video into the PC? The most challenging part is to transfer VHS, Hi8 or DV tapes to PC. HD camcorder with SD card or smartphone are easy.
    3. Having the necessary software to edit and author DVD or any other HD format.

They did not let you become a computer technician because you failed a psychometric test? What country is that?

Anyway, to work with old videos you need to learn a bunch of mind-numbing things.

Or, you can pick up a modern camera and shoot progscan with square pixels and edit using, say, DaVinci Resolve. Although you might still need to learn about codecs and color spaces.

It is amazing how many editors/DPs nowadays can shoot a film for a large network, but know nothing about interlacing or non-square pixels, which becomes painfully evident from their "let's shoot with a 1990s camcorder!" videos. This does not hurt their view count or likes, because their viewers are just as clueless.

Let us start with what equipments do you have and your video sources.
CD DVD Blu-Rays video tapes are things of the past. You need to move all the content as files on hard disks. Make a logical list of contents.
Don't waste your time making DVD's.
I have a library of homemade DVD's from past years and started this week to convert them to files onto my computer.

It's hard for others to understand, but I think I'm the same as the OP. I can't think in time-space. For example, I'm bad at chess, checkers and even tic-tac-toe because I can't think 2-3 moves ahead. I have the same problem with even the simplest programming. I can conceptualize how an IF, THEN statement can branch off into two possible other statements, but can't how those two branches will break off into future statements. Does this make sense? This may not be a good example. I'm walking on a path and see a fork in the road leading left and right. While others see that the left path branches off to three other paths and the right path branches off to two other paths, all I can see is the fork in front of me.

Edit: I realized this when I had to do a simple montage video for a friend. It was a slideshow with a voiceover, but I couldn't conceptualize how the entire video would look like. I had to break it up into sections according to what the voiceover was and hope that the sections worked together. Maybe that's how video editing works, but it was a major pain for me.

Yes. Just do it and find out for yourself. If you fail at first, try again. If you still can't figure it out by yourself post here.
