  1. I have been playing with Kdenlive. But maybe there is a better solution. I want to do basic editing including fades and some masking of logos. I also want to edit subtitles and have them be part of the output file but not hardcoded into the video. And I want to have more than one subtitle track. Free or cheap. Ideas?

    1. [1]Any text editor like Notepad++ to do simple text editing otherwise in programs like Subtitle Edit.
[2]To be included within the file but not hardcoded then use the MKV container like MKVToolNix
[3]Have more than one subtitle - see 2 above, MKV files can any number of subs and audio tracks

However there are very few media-players that can run 2 or more subtitles AT THE SAME TIME. If that is your need then you need a more complex solution.
With MKV files you can simply select the sub you want or even mark it default and forced but it always depends on the media player if it supports all the combinations MKV can provide. My media player is a Zidoo, but there are also Dune, Zappiti etc as hardware players. On a PC or MAC or Linux there are many that work the way you want except for simultaneous display of several subs...

    All programs are free
SONY 75" Full array 200Hz LED TV, Yamaha A1070 amp, Zidoo UHD3000, BeyonWiz PVR V2 (Enigma2 clone), Chromecast, Windows 11 Professional, QNAP NAS TS851

In general, subtitles need to be edited separately in a subtitle editor. (There are a few paid specialty editors that can cut and join certain forms of broadcast TV subtitles/closed captions along with the video)
Ignore list: hello_hello, tried, TechLord, Snoopy329
