  1. Alright guys, I'm dying here. I've searched the archives here and other forums for answers and I've found people who have had the same problem, but nobody has the answer yet. Maybe if I post it one more time someone will finally have an answer that works for me.

I have a Harry Potter avi. I'm trying to extract the audio to wav using Virtual Dub (1.4.10). After loading the video file in VD, the file info tells me that the sampling rate is 48000, 5 channel stereo. In the audio tab, I select full processing, I switched the conversion to 44000, the compression to no compression and save wav. The error I get is "The requested audio compression is not compatable with the input format. Check that the sampling rate and channel count of the input match those of the requested format".

I've even tried blowing off extracting the audio and go straight to TMPGEnc and encode it, but it doesn't even recognize that there audio on the file. It encodes it without the audio. So I need a wav file to put in its place there.

What other info do I need to supply for your help? I'm at the end of my rope!!!!!! I've created many vcd's successfully in this matter and this is the first time I've had this problem. Please Please Please help me

  2. Solution:

You probably need to get Nimo Codec Pack (http://perso.wanadoo.fr/nimo/). Install this with the decode installation option. (also make sure you read every step of the installation because there are two optioons that you shouldn't install unless you have a certain video card or something else.)

    This should work

Thanks, but I saw that in some of the prior posts, and I've already installed the Nimo pack, with the decode installation option.

I think you may be trying too hard! All you should need to do is fire up Virtualdub, and load the avi. Just check that you can hear sound by playing for a few seconds. If sound, press stop. Now, only do the following - nothing more. Audio > Full processing mode. File > Save wav.

The uncompressed wav will be big, and still 48,000. If you are creating a VCD, that is no problem. If you are going to SVCD you'll need to downsample to 44,100 using something like Soundforge or CooleEdit.

  6. I wish that did work, but alas no. When playing the avi with Windows Media Player, it looks and sound great. But after loading it in Vdub, I still get that same error as posted in my first post (see above). Even when simply opening the file and selecting full processing and sav wav. ERROR. I also get no sound in the preview.

mmmh. Strange that you can play OK in mediaplayer yet not in VDub. Cany you slice off a bit in VDub using direct stream copy, and post to alt.binaries.test, or somewhere similar? I'd like to have a go at cracking this.

well, if its five channel, then its some form of surround sound(obviously) which means its either the AC-3 off of the dvd, or some form of uber compressed rubbish (you know these divx users.... ) my suggestion, use direct stream copy in vdub, and see if DVD2AVI can open it and decode it. if all else fails, use cooledit to record your pc sound while playing the Divx. it'll only be stereo, but its foolproof.

It's probably ac3. I use Nandub to open the file, go to save WAV just as you would in Vdub. When done, rename that file to file.ac3 then you must use Cilo's or Cirin';s (name is something like that) ac3_> all other format tool.

I found it on the forum here by searching for ac3 to wav conversion. Vdub won't work as it doesn't have ac3 support Nandub did.

This expalins the first part - in the last step of the post

You can use BeSweet or so. I like the Ciril's One (again I'm not sure on the name, but I know it's similar)

go to doom9.org's download area for ac3 to wav convertoers and Nandub.

  10. Had the same problem (different film tho!) Use BeSweet with BeSweet GUI to extract the 5.1 ac3 to a stereo .wav file, that should fix your problem!
