  1. Hi!
I have a problema with my JVC HR-S9500. When TBC/NR Is activated, a white gradient appears in the upper side of the image (first photo) . When turned off, it disappears (second photo).
    Has anyone had this problem?

In the analog world you have to lower your expectations, Nothing perfect with VHS. The TBC does digitize the video and convert back to analog, that could be the reason, Another one could be aging electronic components, If it's visible only in dark screen don't worry about otherwise send it for a full restoration, Such job could cost around $400.

My guess it's a bleed through because a TBC removes also MacroVision, which is also is in those upper lines that are not visible in the screen image, is there anywhere an option for upper or under scan ?
Also a guess is, that the bezel of your tv is just covering a slight edge of the border of the actual lcd screen, so it could be partly "feature" of your tv/monitor also.

Could be by design or possibly aging filtering capacitors...

  5. It's not the TBC. It is the NR filter which seems to make the picture generally brighter as I see it. But how do we know which one is "correct"?
Apparently TBC and NR can't be selected independently for this VCR model.

I need to see actual captures to diagnose, not bad cell phone photos.
    Clips, not still.

Right now, it could be anything, and all guesses thus far as just random guesses.

  7. Thanks for helping.
While waiting to make some captures, I am attaching some videos that may help. It seems that the VHS is normally darker in the upper and bottom part and the TBC/NR corrects the problem, but I don't understand why it's so bright in the TV which I took the picture from.

    MacroVision

capture with TBC turned on, it will not be in the capture, or you can mask it yourself in post.

You will need a capture device that doesn't recognize MV or a frame TBC that removes it, otherwise you won't be able to convert it to digital.

  10. Are you able to test with a tape that doesn't have copy protection on it? Could be some interaction between the how the TBC affects the macrovision bit and how the video decoder in the TV reacts rather than anything wrong with either. Also idk about the NTSC ones but I have at least seen the TBC on the PAL JVC HR-S8500 and 8600 giving issues on macrovision tapes (though that may be in part from the macrovision white square at the bottom left of the image which this one doesn't seem to have).

Image being darker at the top is a very typical effect the macrovision bits can cause.

Do you capture from s-video or composite, see if switching to the other output make any difference...
