    Hi,

I just downloaded the software last week and am a beginner. I have some of the basics down and like the software. One issue I keep running into tho is lagging in the preview window. I've watched a number of videos on youtube and have tried all of the following without luck: changed the default profile to Mobile 360p, increased the cache limit to 8000 MB (I have 16 GB RAM, i7 processor, 1 TB HDD, Win 10), made sure I have Memory not Disk selected.

The clips I'm using are from iStock and also HD video from my iphone. But even if I import just one clip into the project I still get lagging. The clip sizes range from 30 to 110 MB or so.

Any advice would be welcome, thank you.

I have a similar spec PC i7-6700K 4.00GHZ, 16GB memory (but running Windows 7) and also had difficulty editing HD footage. I use Vegas software and would experience the lag you describe especially when "scrubbing" the timeline but also with the preview resolution scaled down.

Vegas suggests building "Proxy" files and then doing your editing on those files. When encoding, it applies the edits to the original HD files. This works well but it takes time for Vegas to convert from HD to Proxy files.

Further studying this issue, I found out about the super high speed "NVMe SSD drive" which plugs directly into the motherboard's M.2 slot. Luckily, my Gigabyte motherboard and BIOS supported this feature. I bought a 500GB NVMe M.2 SSD with M notch. There are nuances so you have to study your specific motherboard for compatibility. I believe I also had to download a driver so Windows knew about the new NVMe drive.

My HD files are stored on this high speed drive and problem solved. The throughput on the NVMe drive is so much faster. Scrubbing and previewing no longer lag. Encoding is much faster as well.

Here's a link that helped me:

Thanks creakndale I appreciate all the information; I'll check it out. I've been thinking about a SSD for a while, they seem really cool.
