problems playing vcd

i am trying to burn a vcd from a avi file i followed the guides. i converted it to a mpg with TMPGEnc and file play fine then i burned it with nero ver 5.5.7.8 and also tryed using vcdeasy ver 1.0.9 it says every worked but i can't play in my dvdplayer (creative pc dv dxr2) or in my standalone dvd player(toshiba sd-1600) but i can open dat file with win media player and it will playif i am using my burrner (hp cd writer plus 9100 series)if itry that with my dvd-rom it frezzes and i hav to reboot i have wasted close to 10 disks trying. i have checked the compatabilaty lists none of mine were in there any help or advice would be helpfull

my dvd-rom also has hard time play cd-rs...leave that to burners or regular cd-roms

toshiba? could be that it's not compatible, try getting pioneer dvd player and dvd-rom
