I need help.
Everytime I try to convert AVI files to MPG using TMPGEnc, after converting for a minute or two, the computer all of sudden reboots. If I try to use NERO, I get an unknown error or the computer reboots also. Anyone have any idea? I have divx 3 and 4 installed. When I had 5 installed, it rebooted more frequently when I tried TMP......
I have AMD 1.8, 256 mb ram, 32mb video NVIDIA, do you need me to go on?

I have helped a few people who have had similar problems.
Can I assume you didnt convert the audio stream to WAV? if the answer is yes - do that then try again - it *should* work - if not let me know and I'll try and suggest other fixesyour pal,
Stinky -
I tried converting the audio to wave. That made it last a little bit longer, but it then rebooted again.
Any other ideas? I used VirtualDub to convert the audio to wave.
Thanks. -
Ok I just got an email from you also but I'll reply here
is it a DivX ? try running DivFix on it first to re-index the file
http://www.divx-digest.com/software/divfix.html
if that doesnt work - please let me know what version of TMPGEnc you are using and then go into TMPGEnc-Options-Environmental Settings-VFAPI Plugins and tell me the priority and name of each VFAPI Pluginyour pal,

Also - open the file in VirtualDub and go to file-information and tell me what DivX is it? 3 , 4 or 5 (assuming it is a DivX)
your pal,
Stinky -
It is a Divx 4.2 file
As far as TMPENGEnc 2.5
AVI2 (Open DML) File Reader 0
BMP/PPM/TGA/JPG File Reader 0
Wave File Reader 0
DirectShow Multimedia File Reader -1
AVI VFW compatability reader -2
Thanks Stinky -
The complete version of TMPGEnc is
Version 2.54.36.134
Core Version 1.87.133
I changed the DirectShow and the AVI VFW to 0. Now everything is at 0. I also installed the VirtualDub Handlers. Thanks for the tip on VirtualDub.
I did the divfix and everything, still after a couple of minutes, it reboots.
Am I doomed? -
Okay, I'm narrowing it down.
I did get two files to convert correctly.
They were: Audio MPEG Layer-3
Video DIVXMPG4 v3
But the other ones giving me troubles say they are
Audio MPEG Layer-3
but for Video just says DIVX codec
I right click and get advanced properties in XP to get this information
Any clue? Is there a better codec or something to use? -
wsmitty,
Ok, I just have a suggestion. It may work, it may not... Windows XP is set by default to reboot your computer when a fatal error occurs.
Try to change it, maybe it will work, and at least, if it doesn't work, you'll have an error message that may help you know what the problem is.
To disable the automatic reboot, right click on My Computer, go to Advanced tab, then, under "System Failure", uncheck "Automatically restart".
Restart your computer and go on the whole process of conversion. See if it works, and if not, write down the error message and post it... It could help finding a solution...
Another tip, if Windows XP has a fatal error, maybe it's because tmpgenc takes too much resources and prevent Windows from working correctly...
Try limiting the system resources taken by tmpgenc by following these instructions:
- Launch tmpgenc and start the encoding
- Hit CTRL-ALT-DEL once to open the Windows Task Manager
- Click on the "Processes" tab and find TMPGEnc.exe.
- Check the CPU and MEM usage next to it... It usually goes over 90% during a conversion.
- Right click on TMPGEnc.exe, then "Set Priority > Low"
- Close the Windows Task Manager and wait to see if the conversion works...
Hope this helps -
Thanks for the tip. It worked. This is what error came up.

Glad to know it worked for you
I just want to suggest you to look at the Microsoft Knowledge Base for your error. I made a basic search wich returned many results. It could be interesting for you to check if you're among one of these categories:
Here's the link to the results page
Hope this can help- A Life? Cool! Where can I download one of those from?
- I have a dream: 1,000,000,000,000 bytes free.
- The box said: 'install on Windows XP, 2003 or better'. So I installed it on Linux.
