  1. Is it true that Windows 98 limits the file size you can have? If so how does DVD2AVI handle this limitation. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!!!

  2. never had a problem w/ file size in win98...of course i've never tried to combine all the vob files into 1 big vob file when ripping, but you're not suppose to do that anywayz

  3. Yes, the FAT32 file system limits file size to 4GB. NTFS (not "NTSF", as some errantly acronymize), available in Windows NT/2000/XP has no such limitation, at least not a limitation you are likely to reach for quite a few years. If you'd like to capture a 60GB uncompressed AVI file without having "only 15 linked files, it works pretty good...really it does...", NTFS (and hence NT/XP/2000) is for you.

NTFS also avoids the 32GB partition size limit, which some people discover when they add their new 40GB hard drive, only to discover that FAT32 will not allow the entire disk to be formatted as a single partition.
As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."

    I've got a 120GB Hard Disk on Win 98SE (FAT32) with a 70GB partition. Is it just a fluke?!

No, it just means that you are not using the WINDOWs FDISK and FORMAT commands to set the up. (Are you using Partition Magic, or something like that?)

  6. No, it's not a fluke. FAT32 can support partitions of up to 127GB (with a disk controller and BIOS that fully support interupt 13 extensions). However, FAT32 partitions larger than 32GB cannot be created in NT/XP/2000, only in 98/ME - but then you still have FAT32 and the 4GB file size limit. With NTFS, you get the large partitions, and also large file sizes.

I used NT3 and then NT4, but so much of my favorite software wasn't compatible, so I let it fall by the wayside and went with 98SE until 2000 came out (after a couple of service packs), and then XP (my current OS, Pro one one box, Home on 2 others).
