  1. I have made a backup of a DVD by Smartripping it and writing the VIDEO_TS file onto a DVD-R using NERO in UDF/ISO format, yet my Sony DVD player displays an error code C:13:0 when I enter the disc. It is not the media as I have burned home made films onto these Princo discs and they play fine. I have also backed up other films using a VOB ripper and SpruceUP - these also worked fine when written with NERO. What is going on??? Am I missing something obvious here???

I had the same happen. Plays with my Apex but not my Panasonic. Plays with my PC but not my Mac.

One thing I noticed was that VIDEO_TS was actually video_ts. I wonder if that matters.

Of course it matters... it means that your DVD is NOT ISO9660 complient. A lot of machines act like an old DOS machine. If you try to feed them directory and file names in lowercase letters, they will not recognize them.

For compatibility, always use 8.3 (FILENAME.EXT) format (DVD requires) and always use CAPITAL or UPPERCASE letters.

timbo, Smartripper does NOT automatically bring all the files that you need, unless you use FILES and select ALL. You are probably missing required files. Tell us the files that are on the "non-playing" disk.

  4. I had the same problem using smartripper only.
Even if you select the backup tab and copy every files, after burning, your home player won't play.
I solved this problem with IFOedit.
After the complete backup on your hard drive, run IFOedit and open every VTS_XX_X.ifo files. Use the 'GET VTS sector' button. Answer No when it ask to correct all files. The best is to correct files one by one.
It will display pointer correction several time. Save the files once corrected.
Repeat the process on each VTS_XX_X.ifo and end with the VIDEO_TS.IFO file. (it is better to close en re-open IFOedit between each file).

After you can burn to DVD-R. Home player should accept the disk.
