  1. I've ordered some Region 1 DVD's but am wondering wether I will be able to rip them using my DVD-ROM drive which is set to Region 2. Some programs like Smart Ripper require me to authenticate the DVD drive using a software DVD player but because my DVD ROM drive is region 2 it won't be able to be authenticated using Power DVD. Is there anyway to authenticate without having to patch the firmware to make the drive multiregion.

  2. i'm not sure...but the latest dvddecryptor may not require that you play the dvd with powerDVD/winDVD first...you might be able to rip it that way (maybe even removing macrovision too -->in options)

  3. is your firmware one of those you can patch to rpc-1 status? some dvd rom drive can be set that way, then all you have to do is switch your software to correct region. This is why Pioneer ( the 116 ) is so popular as you can firmware patch to rpc-1 ( no region ) and rip / play movies from another region as long as you set your software for that region.

to see if your drive can be patched, but it's also a one way ticket if you do as flashing can fail, so it's a risk you have to asses.

  5. There is no way short of patching the firmware, the reason being if he changes his region to even allow playing / ripping of the movie he only has 4 changes left ( that and he must change region in the software as well or use zone selector or drive genie ) but the drives are hardcoded for region and only allow 5 changes before being stuck on the last region set. This why people patch their dvd roms to rpc-1 status.

  6. I'm in region 1, and I rip other region DVDs all the time (done both 2, and 4) without changing a thing or any firmware. I just use smart ripper. I can't PLAY the DVDs on my 'puter, but I can rip 'em.

  7. so if you can rip then you could ifoedit them to no region, from there they will play, i stand corrected then, this I did not know as possible.

    Hi

My problem is related to this. I have Sony DVD Rom with PowerDVD and want to use Smartripper. Whilst Smartripper will go through the analyse IFO routine, it will not read the files for ripping unless the region for the disk has been set in PowerDVD first. And I've only got 2 allowable changes left!

Is there any software that will accept unlimited changes. Am I forced to find a firmware hack?

    Comments greatly appreciated.

    Cheers

  9. Suggestion...

Could those who have successfully ripped from DVDs regardless of region without updating firmware please list some of their system specifications? I was thinking something like this:

    - SmartRipper VERSION # (or other DVDRIP software)

    - Operating System/Revision

    - Make/Model of DVD Drive

    - Current Region Setting for DVD-ROM

    - Number of Region Changes left on DVD-ROM

    - Current Region of Software DVD-ROM player

    - All Regions successfully ripped from

    - System Processor Type/Speed

    - MPEG2 Drivers/Revision

    - etc....

Maybe with this information it would be easier to tell how likely it would be that someone will be able to rip a DVD from another region without drastic or risky measures.

Thanks everyone for answering my question in this thread on region coding of DVD's. I asked that question the other day wondering whether it is possible ripping a region 1 DVD with my region 4 DVD-ROM drive.

Looks like I should able to do so. It is possible to read and copy the Region 1 DVD disc from the region 4 DVD-ROM Drive. I noticed this before of the possibility of doing this even though it can't play them.

My DVD-ROM drive is unfortunately as RPC-2, this means forever as region 4. My 5 times region changing is now over and fixed on my local region code. I successfully fixed my final region setting from region 1 to my local region in the computer's registry editer, Regeit. I have to do this for my local DVD's here.

I am not so bad, I have a DVD player which is DVD multi-region and I don't mind. I am planning another DVD-ROM in another computer as region 1 or unrestricted. This computer already has a video card installed and shouldn't be a problem. I 'll be able to play region 1 DVD's on one computer and the other with region 4 DVD's. Hopefully, I will be able to get a multi-region DVD-ROM drive. I have to find one. Anybody has any suggestion of DVD-ROM brand?

    Hi CJGS

Have you looked to see if you can install new firmware for your CDROM drive. I had a similar prob with Sony but although it was a bit tricky installing it, my CDRom is now region free.

With the "Region Killer" freeware software also downloaded, I can rip and play (in PowerDVD) anything. Saved me a lot of money using what I already had.

Let me know if you need any site info.

    Cheers
