Is there an easy way to do this? I don't know where to begin...
My problem is I have firewire on an old laptop and I got a DV cam hooked to it. I have another laptop on the receiving end of a cat 5 cable coming from the old laptop. I just need to get SD video transferred via these 2 machines. I don't need to record, just need to transfer.

VLC has capture and streaming modules:

Depends on selected codec - HUFFYUV or similar lossless codec should be OK. RAW video will be around 150Mbps, after huffyuv perhaps he can go bellow 100Mbps (assumption that network is 100 Mbps, if it is 1Gbps then even on Cat 5 for 10 - 20 meters should be no problem to create 1Gbps connection) and of course some lossy Intra codec can be used (or copy natively DV) - i assume VLC is quite flexible on this.
