Burning .mpg's, .avi's as data for direct play on DVD player

What are the requirements for burning a (data) CD and then seeing it on a DVD player (I have Apex, i'll post model later if needed) I burn some videos and then try to play it on the DVD player and it sees the folder. Then I try it with some other videos, and it doesn't see the folder. CD-RW doesn't work right?

I don't think u can see video's on a dvd player with a Data cd can ya ?

Yup, you can. People have had discussions about "direct .mpeg" playing and how it's better than VCD's and that's how I figured it...I could be wrong and that might be why it only works half the time. Someone shed some more light onto this...

as far as i know DVD palyers does not regognice Mpeg or avi files on the CD's created as DATA cd's since they dont understand the structure. but there is a Model od DVDplayer from panasonic which can Play windows media files from CD. I do not know the Model number i saw it in Target.

The APEX 1500 has reports of playing MPEGs burned as data files although I doubt that the same is true for avi's

I have not tried it with the 2 1500s I have but I plan to.

For best compatability I prefer to burn as svcd or vcd with a menu. Then it'll play in more players.

Apex players will play data CDs with MPEGs and MP3s but not AVIs. Some Apex players will also play Windows Media Audio files, but not Windows Media Video files. You have to navigate to the folder containing the MPEG ... or for testing purposes, just burn the files on the root of the disk so the selections show up immediately.

If your MPEG video is standard resolution and bitrate for a VCD, you can fit more video onto a CD if you author it properly as a VCD. Standard VCDs can hold 74min/80min of content, while a data CD with MPEG video at VCD standard bitrate/resolution can only hold about 65min/70min of content.

Thanks sumibas and kitty for the info. Didn't know any DVD player can play windows media player files. I burn as data CD's in hopes of it burning faster (no need for encoding), but now I think you have to have VCD standards for it to play properly...so there's really no need to burn as data CD's if thats the case.

Thanks AntnyMD, didn't know it was only .mpeg, nor did I notice. Even if I just burn to the root folder, I still have to navigate to "root" to access the files. Hmm..i'll try this some other time. Thanks again.
