  1. I don't know if the problem is my shinco dvd player, my television or the way im encoding the divx. when i first got into making vcds i used the TMPGEnc encoder, but recently i started using other encoders such as the Panasonic Mpeg1 encoder and the Xing encoder. They ended up lookin way better then the vcds i made with TMPGEnc (except when i make svcds with TMPGEnc). but the problem with all the encoders i used, they still cut about 20 lines off the top/bottom and left/right corners when i play them on my dvd. The problem with this is that most of my movies are in another langague and they have subtitles. And it's completly unwatchable when I have to squint my eyes trying to read the text which is like half cut off. And my Sony Television is big, (by the way I encode it NTSCfilm), i tried watching it on my smaller television and even more lines were cut off in the corners. First i thought it was just my dvd player, then i tried it at my friends Pioneer dvd player, and it did the same thing. So that's when I used the panasonic mpeg1 encoder, It had a chopping feature, it worked, but... I just think it looks sill when black bars are covered around all four sides. And i intend to share my vcds with family and friends and they probably going to think it looks silly too. I really dont mind if my vcd stretchs to fit the screen, as long as it doens't cut off anything. Is it just my dvd player? the way im encoding? or maybe it's my crappy computer

  2. There is nothing wrong with your TV/DVD player/encoding.

TVs are designed with overscan so that up to 10% of all sides (usually about 5%) are cropped. TV programs/DVDs are designed not to have any important visual data too close to the sides -- and this could be your problem.

If you have something like subs too close to the bottom, you will have to add a border.

  3. is that so? well that's good to hear that it's not my fault. And yeah the subtitles are way at the bottom. I think this is because a lot of my movies are fansubs. Anyways, would you recommend how much I should crop off? I got a high quality divx that is 640x480. I already added 20 lines off the top and bottom, but I haven't burn it yet and tried it on my dvd player. If anybody is good at croppin, can you please tell me the steps on how to add borders correctly?
