I do this all the time with my SONY TRV320.
1. Connect VCR to camcorder (RCA or S-VIDEO), your camcorder must be DV-in enabled.
2. Set Camcorder to PLAYER
3. Use DV capture software to capture the video from Firewire. I use Premiere without any problems.
With Sony D8 camcorder such as mine you don't need to record to tape first. The camcorder is actually used as a digitizer for your analog video. A very usefull feature I must say, but not every camcorder has it. -
im not sure if mine is DV IN enabled.....I think i did pretty much what you described but with no luck....would my vcr have to be on video1-video1 or what?....would i be able to use it straight from the tv?
i would guess a s-video would be better than RCA...am i right?
thanks!

Well, if your camcorder was purchased outside EU then it is most probably DV-in enabled.
Your VCR's RCA sockets correspond to either Video 1 or Video 2 or AV. This you have to find out yourself. Once you have VCR playing and all cables connected, set VCR in PLAYER mode the video should appear in your capture program, If not, just go through channels on your VCR until it does.
I have yet to see a TV with *VIDEO OUT* socket. Using it from VCR is the same as using it from TV (aerial) provided you have all channels properly tuned in your VCR.
S-VIDEO produces better qualilty video than RCA. However, no sound is carried over s-video cable, you must sent sound to your camcorder seperately (very combersome process).
You should try setting your camcorder to VCR mode, it might just work. If this fails you probably can't record video to your PC on the fly.
Can you record video from your VCR to the camcorder tape? -
guys,
...trying to get VCR video to your PC (firewire) through your dv camcorder... you're feeding ANALOG signal to your camcorder's input.
The things that you need to check/consider in this setup:
- Analog Input (of your DV Camcorder), if she has it or not.
- Pass-through capability (of your DV camcorder), if she has the capability or not.
hope this helps.
