I open .avi files in Stream Clip and it plays audio perfectly but shows no video, only a white screan. Why is that?

    Installed I have:
    have Quick Time v. 7.1.6
    3ivx MPEG 4
    ffdshow
    XP Codec Pack

    Thanks for any help.

I used GSpot instead and it says:
    CODEC: mp42
    NAME: S-Mpeg 4 version 2

and it also informs that 'codec(s) are installed"

  4. mpegstreamclip doesn't use the same system (directshow or vfw) ; it uses a separate one based on quicktime API. You have to be able to open that file in quicktime, in order for it to work in mpegstreamclip. There are some plugins that you might be able to download, but none of them are free

So you can open that video in other programs, such as virtualdub, or players such as MPC , but not mpegstreamclip.

    Thank you for your comment.

It looks strange because for some time I was able to play .avi clip compressed with "XviD ISO MPEG-4" but not the avi file compressed with "S-Mpeg 4 version 2".

Then I opened Xvid file in Avidemux and since then it all messed up in Stream Clip. It only opens audio, vido is blank.

  6. Exactly what are you trying to do?

You should be able to open it up in vdub, if you have mp42 enabled in the ffdshow vfw configuration (gold icon)

You should be able to play in a direct show player like MPC if you have mp42 enabled in ffdshow configuration (red icon)

I want to open .avi Divx in StreamClip, edit it and save as Divx and then be able to play it in stand alone DVD player.

In a compression menu in VD I can see Xvid MPEG-4 codec but no Divix.

Sorry if I sound ignorant but I'm not that advanced in video processing.

Not in MPEG Streamclip and especially not in PC (Windows) version.
Because MPEG StreamClip uses QuickTime - and QuickTime for Windows does not support MS MPEG-4 and Xvid.

Because you do not have it installed.
But usually you can use Xvid instead DivX (can even use ffdshow VfW).

... and then will I be able to play Xvid and ffdshow compressed movie (VfW) in a standard stand alone DVD player?

Majority of standalone DVD/DivX players simply supports MPEG-4 ASP wideo with FourCC DX50, DIVX and XVID in AVI container.
Even if standalone DVD/DivX player does not support the XVID FourCC code (it's rather rare), you can always change code to DX50 (used AVI FourCC Code Changer for example).
In ffdshow Video Codec configuration, you can choose the encoder (MPEG-4/libavcodec or Xvid ...) and the FourCC code (DX50, DIVX, XVID, ...).

If you read the requirements as listed on their website http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-win.html you need to either buy the the Quicktime MPEG2 decoder for Quicktime OR install QuickTime Alternative version 1.81 and not more recent versions only this one.
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_quicktime_alternative/?2615

Apple QuickTime 7 is the official distribution of QuickTime. This free installer is recommended, however it is a very large file (more than 20 MB without iTunes) and it does not include MPEG-2 decoding (you have to buy the MPEG-2 playback component separately from Apple, for $19.99).

  13. I am having the same issue with no video when I use mpeg stream to convert my avi to a dv file. But I am trying to put the video into final Cut Pro so I can do some editing to it. It is also a full length movie, but only converts about the first 3:30 of it, so if anyone knows why this happens please let me know how to fix it . Could someone please help me out on how I should fix this? Here are the specs of the video:

I solved this issue for myself and hopefully it helps you for your problems too and whoever else reads this in the future. I just went through each codec option and tried them and BOOM! one of them worked! I was exporting in H.264 and was only having audio come through with a black screen. But when I used the codec Apple Intermediate Codec it worked just fine! Good luck y'all!
