  1. If you could build your own video editing (or any other kind of) PC/Workstation using the most high-end parts and money was NOT an issue, what would it be?

  2. Money is not an issue?? Are you from the government or something?

No, but seriously, if money is not an issue, the computer I want would be so mind-bogglingly huge, it require all the matter and energy in the Universe, and several alternate universes as well.

What would I want a computer like that for? Simulating a new universe! It'll be just like this one, but with me a bit taller!

I could make due with this +5 year old Watson model until my super computer facility was built. This watson model has 16TB of RAM, and I thought my 16GB of RAM was great.

  4. assuming this is a serious question...

    i7-6950X ~$1700
    x99 mobo: ~$500
    8x16 ddr-4 ~$1000
    dual 1080 gpus 2x$700
    3xsamsung 950 Pro 2 tb in raid 0 3x$900
display: oh I don't know, how 'bout the FSI DM250? ~$8000
software: this is harder, but I would say the entry point starts at $1000 for something worthy of this hardware (or will you just be using Avisynth?)
and hopefully you already have a w10 license lying around, so score! just saved $150 bux!

so far only $15k and we don't even have a GUI display, the cost of calibration software/spectroscopes—so we can be certain our reds really are red—the render farm that we offload all our projects to so our 'puter doesn't waste clocks while we edit and grade, or the gpu expansion chassis when we decide that dual 1080s isn't enough, but I think I have gone beyond the scope of the OP. Oh, and do I have to save a little money for a a decent camera like a Red?

I would make a great govt worker!

  5. I already have it, a Microsoft Surface Pro 4 (i7, 16Gb RAM, 1Tb SSD). It does everything I need it to do

Yes, it is a serious question.

This is for a top of the line 4k and under video editing PC/Workstation.

Would something like the Nvidia Titan or Quadro be a good choice and also, are dual xeons better?

  7. whoa! a serious question though very poorly phrased and poor choice of posting in the off topic sub versus the computer sub.

What software are you planning to use? What kind of cameras do you have? What will you be editing? ProRes? DNxHQ? RAW? Do you plan to grade your footage? These questions are much more important than spec'ing out a top of the line workstation as it will drive what sort of hardware you need. This forum is not really the best place to get this sort of advice. I could be wrong, but I don't think there are that many who have experience with high end editing workstations. And 4K for some bizarre reason is regularly poo-pooed by the long time members.

    But to answer your questions:

Never choose quadro over gtx for video editing, esp for 4K. I would wait for the 1080 Ti versus the Titan X. The main thing is 12 gb of vram. moar is better.

Dual xeon vs an extreme sku is not apples vs apples. Once you get into xeons, you are in the world of enterprise class parts like oodles of ECC ram, tons cpu cores and pcie lanes. Maybe that is important to you? Most people who go this route typically just buy an off-the-shelf system like an HP Z series. xeons are like a bus while extreme skus are like a ferrari. I would never choose a ferrari to ferry 200 people across town. Get it?

Since this is a computer question, moving you to the Computer Forum where you may get more responses.

I would also recommend you change the thread title as it is a bit misleading.
