I was given an avi file to view. When I play it with vlc, a pop up states that it doesn't have correct codec (GAVC)
I have used all of the above players and all do not play.
I have also downloaded klite.. still no luck.
This file was created with some sort of security footage program (no idea what software was used)
Any thoughts/ideas?

Had the same issue playing back a surveillance video from Geovision 8.5

Used this, works on win7 x64 8.5 (and below, presumably) - Right click>install .inf setup files
You can google search for GeoCodec-V853.zip or current link here: http://www.bergfiles.com/i/bf501f0be6h32i0

After reading through the thread I found the codec from geovision at: http://www.geovision.com.tw/english/5_5.asp worked with Windows MP.

Felt a bit safer using this than a file from a codecs site (on the company computer).

I had the same problem texasdontholdem user. So I followed the recommendation watice user (GeoCodec-V853.zip). It's okay now!

 I work with "win7 32" ...

The above link is broken, try http://www.geovision.com.tw/english/5_8.asp instead

If this video was from a pc-based DVR, the backup typically includes about 1180 files, which include the proprietary player (EZViegLog500.exe) along with other required files for playback.
Otherwise, if all you have are the video files, you might want to try to play with FFMPEG (or WinFF for an easier to use GUI).
Another workflow would be use use VideoConcatenator if you have multiple files to join them and rewrap them into a non-proprietary format.
