I use my landlord's Virgin Wi-Fi 2G connection but for the last couple of months, even though i haven't downloaded any suspicious programs i remember or got a virus (ran tests), every 5-15 mins the connection cuts out and shows either "limited connection" or actually shows a connection, but clearly isn't working to generate pages? Which basically stops my laptop connection and prevents a stable internet for long.

The only laptop settings I changed since this started was to update the network adapter driver and change the router's channels to auto (2g and 5g). My landlord says it looks OK at the Superhub2 router downstairs (I live in the top room two floors up from the router, which is beside his TV in his room, but I have access to check the router's settings from where I am - when I have a connection!) though he says he also has had ''limited connection'' at times downstairs?

It's awkward because I can't dictate what he should do and I can't make any [visible] changes. Is this a weak connection/signal that can be helped by buying a wifi extender, etc? Or is his superhub2 in need of replacement?

Wireless routers showing such symptoms indicate they are failing and due for replacement.

Step 1 would be to restart all devices involved.

Since both your connection and your landlord's connection are affected, I would say the problem is more likely on the router end. Restarting the modem (if it is separate from the router) and the router is worth a try. If that changes nothing, the router may be failing. If it were just you having the problem, then I would have said to try rolling back your wireless card's drivers.

  5. A change made to the router would affect both units. Both units are affected, and this seems to have happened shortly after the change was made to the router.

A glaringly obvious step would be to reverse the change made to the router. Step one, start there.

What steps are necessary to restore the connection? Just re-connect to the router? How long does it take to re-establish a reliable connection? Does the first attempt to re-establish ALWAYS restore a good connection, or does it sometimes fail, and you have to try 2 or 3 times? Is this process the same on the landlords PC?

What do the indicator lights on both the router AND the modem show, when it fails?

  6. i had this problem not long ago, it was because of the extension lead ( i guess somehow it was not delivering enough ampères to the router)
