I have winXP so download a Handbrake version that should run on XP. v 0.9.2

It seemed to install alright and it comes up but I do see an unexpected error on the first line of that splash screen that comes up when it is loading presets - system.net.web error, something like that. But it proceeds on from there without complaint.

I have some avi files from my fuji finepix camera that are too big and I just want to shrink them for emailing.

when I point handbrake at that directory in file mode it just doesn't see anything there at all...

Anyone know a fix for this? fix handbrake or some other software?

I think the earlier versions of Handbrake for Windows required specific .NET libraries to be installed. I couldn't tell you which, or if it still does, unfortunately.

What type of AVI files do you have? If you're just looking to shrink AVI files, and you're using XP, you might see decent results with AutoGK. (Note that the end result will be AVIs with an XVid video stream and an MP3 audio stream.) I'm not sure what else I might recommend, offhand, that has both good results in converting and is usable with XP.
If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them?

    Hi, thanks for the reply.

I don't know what kind of avi files they are beyond they are created by a fuji finepix camera, as I said.

The job is being done right now by Windows Movie Maker, so that's alright.

Would like to be able to use Handbrake on it though. Think it might be better if only it would do it.

  4. I believe the last XP friendly version of Handbrake was 0.9.9. That's the one I'm running on XP. Try the last version of the 0.9.9 branch from here. Version 0.9.2 is seriously old. Somewhere around 2008. That's before .Net 4 so if it required .Net, it'd be an earlier version. Handbrake 0.9.9 requires .Net 4, but you probably have it installed. Windows update pushes it.

    1) MovieMaker is TERRIBLE.
    2) I believe the only reason we XP users cannot use newer versions of HandBrake is because we XP user cannot install higher(than 3) versions of .net?
Either way....I've never needed a higher version of HandBrake, and if I do I'll spin my chair around and use my wife's laptop.

  6. Handbrake has required .net 4 for quite a while and it can be installed on XP.

I tried installing Vidcoder a while back and when it wouldn't run I asked about it at doom9 and someone linked to this Handbrake thread.

It seems the reason was pretty much, "it broke for XP and we don't want to fix it any more".
It's their time being spent on development, so I guess we can't complain too much.

It may well be terrible. Of three files it turned out one full of heavy pixellation which I guess it might have been responsible for.

But what else to use? That's the point.

Type *.AVI into the filename box and hit Enter. It should then show all AVI file.

Just as hello_hello says, Handbrake 0.9.9 is the one for ol' Windows XP. I "put"it on an old battered notebook (Windows XP Home Edition Version 2000 Service Pack 3, Intel Atom, 0.99 GB RAM 100GB HDD) and it runs just fine. It quickly "sees" my .avi files. Thank you, hello_hello.
