HI, I have a Sony DCR-TRV315 Digital 8 camcorder and have recorded in 16:9 aspect ratio. I have a EZCap capture device I am using S-Video into my USB 2.0 port. I used the capture software, ArcSoft Showbiz 3.5, from the vendor I bought the EZCap from. I played it back with Windows Media player and it was in 4:3 aspect. I captured it in mp4.
I am trying to save all the tapes to my HDD video file.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Maybe I need another software to capture it differently. I also forced Windows Media player to play wider by moving the circle to an oval on the options...

digital 8 is recorded in a 4:3 format on tape no matter if 16/9 is selected. a flag is set to use a different pixel width so that on playback the 4:3 is stretched to 16/9. the only way to properly capture digital 8 is over firewire using a program like winDV. it's captured as DVavi.

Almost correct, but not quite. DV isn't captured. Ever. It's copied via Firewire. Not captured. Not ripped. Not recorded. Copied.

As already mentioned, transferring a copy of the original recording using Firewire is the best way to go, if you can do it. However it isn't an option unless your computer has a Firewire port, or you can install one. To install one you need a desktop computer or a laptop with an ExpressCard slot. USB to Firewire adapters don't work for this application. A Firewire card with a PCI, PCI-e or ExpressCard interface is required. Models like these with a Texas Instruments chipset are the most reliable.

If Firewire transfer isn't possible, then a composite or S-video capture device is the only other good choice.Last edited by usually_quiet; 10th Nov 2015 at 11:17. Reason: left out a word corrected spelling

you could try setting the arcsoft software to 854x480 and see if it works to get you the 16/9 image.
lmotlow - it is capturing not a file transfer. you can start and stop anytime during the tape playing multiple times if you wish. a file transfer is a copy/paste type thing not available with DV type tapes.--
