  1. Hello

I've recently installed VirtualDub on a Windows 7 32bit machine, having had no previous problems running it on XP.

I also have the quicktime plugin for VirtualDub, the Xvid Codec and the Lame Mp3 and AAC/ACM audio codecs. It's all the stuff that works fine on my XP machine.

I'd like to convert an MP4 file to Xvid. The MP4 file plays back fine with sound in VirtualDub. However when I try and run a conversion to Xvid it runs extremely slow.

The stats windows in VirtualDub says the conversion is running at 86fps. The video is only 30 minutes long at 25fps, and so you would expect the conversion to take about 10 minutes? However the stats windows also says the conversion is going to take almost 2 hours !! and it does.

The above is also just the first pass of a 2 pass Xvid encode, I gave up after an hour concluding there must be something wrong.

Do you think this is perhaps a problem with Xvid and Windows 7?

    Thanks

  2. I've now solved this problem and so thought I would let you know in case someone encounters the same difficulties...

When I looked at the file properties in VirtualDub to my surprise it stated that the source MP4 video file was encoded at 333.333fps ! which of course is very unlikely. This would explain why it was taking VD 2 hours to complete the conversion at an encode rate of 86fps.

The Quicktime plugin I had installed was created by fccHandler dated 2012, which was obviously giving problems. Therefore I installed the FFMpeg plugin instead and this now works well and fast as expected.

  3. Your source is probably variable frame rate but marked in the header as 333.333 fps. So VirtualDub was asking for 333.333 fps and the decoder was duplicating frames to give it that.
