    Hi all,

i recently started recording some flights I did in X-Plane 10 for Youtube. At the moment I am using an HD monitor and the Elgato Game Capture HD, which works fine.
I was at a friends house the other day, who runs X-Plane on 4K and let's just say I'm hooked. But of course I won't be able to use the Game Cature HD if I'd switch to a 4k monitor, as it only allows for 1080p passthrough.

Is there a smilar device that is able to pass through a 4k signal to a monitor without a noticable lag/delay or loss in quality, while recording in 1080p?
I don't need or expect studio quality on the recording side of things. It should be comparable to the quality which the Elgato device delivers.

It is mandatroy that I can record gameplay and desktop applications simultaneously without a noticable impact on fps and with reasonable file sizes out of the box

Of course I could switch to a software based solution, but I have yet to find the "perfect" software which is able to deliver the above-mentioned. And on top of that it should do this while downscaling from 4k to 1080p on the fly.

I would spend about $500 max, no matter if it's hard- or software based solution, as long as it works.

    Cheers,
    Matthias

    No.

Software options (on same PC as gameplay) require HEFTY pc upgrades ($$), and has delay.
Software options (on separate recording PC) still require beefy PC, 4k HDMI capture card (e.g. Blackmagic Intensity) still cost $$, and has delay.
Hardware options (such as Atomos Shogun), cost $$ to $$$ (shogun is $1700-$2000), and has (less, but some) delay.
Plus, there are currently no consumer level capture options that do any better than 30p @ 4k. (some should be available soon next year, but will probably cost $4-5k). I would guess that most gamers prefer the smoother motion of 60p with 1080 rather than 30p or less at 4k, anyway.

    Hi Scott,

thanks for your reply, I was afraid of that.
So I guess I'll stay at 1080p while recording for the time being.

I don't need 60p, as in flight simming a steady 30fps is considered very good and everything on top of that is just icing on the cake.

    Cheers,
    Matthias
