Help adding an extra set of subtitles to a foreign film

Hello,

I'm not amazing with technology so am struggling with this;

I'm trying to learn German and want to add subtitles, both English and German, to a film to help me, which is quite straightforward to add 2 sets of subtitles to a film if you have the right software, but I'm having trouble as the film I want to use is an English release of a German speaking film so has the English subtitles hard burned into the film already.

I have ripped the film from DVD onto my PC as a MKV file and played it on VLC with downloaded German subtitles, the subtitles were out of sync as I think they were for the German release of the film and not the English version so the timings must be slightly different for the different releases, I can't find the English release subs anywhere, is there a way to alter the subtitles to play at the right time? It's hard to tell where the subs should be because I don't speak the language yet!

Also I tried changing the German subtitles to play above the English ones that are already there as they were overlapping as VLC doesn't recognise the English as subtitles as they are burned into the film, but I couldn't get them to move even after changing the placement in settings.

Another issue is I want to play the film on my iPad as the PC is at my parents house so I don't always have access it to watch the films, so even if I figure out how to get the German subtitles to run at the right time and sit above the English subtitles already there, it will only work on VLC player (VLC player for iOS doesn't support sound anymore and don't know when they're going to update it, so that won't work).

So, I need to hard burn the German subtitles onto the film with the English ones without them overlapping and make sure they both run at the same time, so I can then convert the file and re-add it to my iPad (the original film is already on my iPad, If there's a way to add German subtitles on my iPad and cut out all the middle stuff at would be great but I doubt that kind of app exists)

Is this even possible? Any help would be really appreciated.

Kind of a long shot:

Re-mux the video with AviDemux.Use Copy for video and audio and select AVI muxer for output format.

Open the file in AVISubDetector. Press Force Sub. Close window. Press Start(Full). This will make a srt file with time codes.

In case you have the same number of subtitles as in the German version (Seldom the case!) you can use Subtitle Edit -> File -> Import Timecodes to get the timecodes from the English version to the German one. Perhaps split the subtitles into parts.
