    Depends on the capture device.

I am sure you asked this question more than once before.

Edit: Yes. You have. Back in 2104

The answers will not have changed since then.

  6. You can't capture VHS with an app. You need hardware -- an analog video capture device.

The genuine EasyCap comes with its own software for MPEG2 captue. If your didn't come with capture software, you have a cheap spinoff, not the real thing. So even if the cheapo's app could cap to MPEG2, it'll be poor quality. You're better off with a DVD recorder than a USB capture device if you want direct to MPEG2. How much of an MPEG encoder do you think you'll get with a low-budget USB dongle?

Definitely virtualdub with that thing. You have to search youtube a little,
    maybe this video:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yvJxXvkNhzk

also download and use huffyuv codec:
    https://www.videohelp.com/software/HuffYUV

after you have the file, use handbrake to convert to h.264, use youtube to figure out.

Well VirtualDub and Huffyuv are OK - compression with HCenc - if there is no special requirements on quality then it was available realtime MPEG2 compression applications, some capture cards offer MPEG-2 as default, also ffmpeg can be used to capture and compress in real time MPEG-2 (but PC looks a bit ancient).

True, lossless capture is better for vhs. More work, but better results. The title and initial post seems to want VHS direct to DVD. Maybe jamespoo should clarify what's desired.

  14. MPEG 2 encoders have to take a lot of shortcuts to encode in real time on a CPU that slow -- so quality will suffer. As was pointed out, you want to capture with a fast lossless encoder like huffyuv. Once capture is complete you perform a slow 2-pass MPEG 2 encoding to get the best quality.

P4 2.0 GHz clock and 1GB RAM - better to separate capture and encoding...

I would say that if HDD space is limited instead Huffyuv better will be MJPEG and if MPEG-2 bitrate is no problem then maybe (maybe highly hypothetically) older ffdshow ( ffdshow_rev3572_20100913_clsid.exe ) with MPEG-2 encoding (motion search disabled, B frames disabled, constant quantizer) may work also... ( AVI will be produced so it need to be converted to MPEG program stream but this can be done easily by ffmpeg )

    Why older ffdshow?

Sorry but give this 6 months and the OP will ask the same Q's again.

Someone really needs to read the rules.
