  2. Welcome to VH.com, browse the forums and use the search feature at the top for great advice.

Back in the day I used cotton swabs and rubbing alcohol to clean the heads.

    Oh dear god!!!
That would be the WORST thing to use to clean the rotary heads of a VCR!!!!!

Little fibers coming off a cotton swab sticking into all kinds of little areas on the heads!!

This is what I have used, or used to use, back in the day,
    M.G. Chemical Chamois Swabs

That can is ages old and I have not opened it in probably a decade, LOL!!
But I am sure they still make it in a more modern container.

Otherwise why not spit on a Qtip and wash your laser lenses with saliva!!!

  4. Yeah, the OP shouldn't have to ask, at least not before searching, because there are many threads here about the subjects in which he's interested. For example, this one about head cleaning:

    https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/365396-VHS-static?

In addition, there are many tutorials on similar subjects all over YouTube.

Yep, which I agree with 99.9% of this post in that thread, which is basically what I said in less writing
    https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/365396-VHS-static?p=2342332&viewfull=1#post2342332

I never saw that thread before otherwise I would have chimed in, for what it's worth.....

Although, it is the OP's first post here so who know's if he is any kind of a regular forum user, here or otherwise.....

    @ranger2001

Recommend reading the following by LordSmurf at DigitalFAQ, detailed instructions on cleaning your VCR.

    http://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/video-capture/4330-how-clean-vcr.html

Regarding regular cotton swabs for cleaning, I've done it as an absolute last ditch effort (no late night stores open in the 80's) and it's scary as h*ll when you see those fibers sticking to the videoheads!
