I am new to all of this, but my DV-444 plays certain movies in black and white. Others, it plays fine. On the black and white ones, the picture and audio are fine, just not in color. When it is playing one of the VCDs that is Black and White, the menu system for the DVD Player is B&W too. On two of the movies, there is a "smiley face" before the actual movie begins, and that shows in color. Anyone have ideas?

Are the VCD in Pal or NTSC? I've got a pioneer 340(a Pal Version). In the beginning I had that problem to when I played NTSC Vcd and Svcd's. Then I discoverd that I had a built in Decoder
and the problem was solved...

I the back of your player is a small switch (PAL/AUTO/NTSC) , try to switch to PAL or NTSC instead of AUTO (default)
