Transferring DVD to VHS: ( How I do it )
Connect DVD RCA Video out to the 'RCA' Video input. ( Most units these days have RCA Inputs on the front of the units ). Using coax ins & outs will produce altering video effects. Change the channel of the VCR from 3 to V1 or V2 depending on the unit. For creating multiple VHS copies at the same time, get a Video Distribution Amplifier from Radio Shack. This allows you to create the same quality VHS copies whereas trying to daisy chain VCR Recorders togther will produce the 1st good copy and every copy thereafter wil loose quality.
As for brightness? Perhaps you should check the capture board. If the capture board bightness is changed, you will transfer that to the DVD and not know it when viewing it on a TV that has been adjusted to your viewing preferences.
Hope something helps. -
That effect of the pic going from normal to very dark and back to normal, etc. is due to the macrovision protection when making copies to VCRs. VCRs work in a different way as do TVs that-s why Macrovision doesn-t affect TVs. There are some gizmos when put in between the two VCRs or DVD and VCR and DVD but cost a fortune. The best is get a DVD with MV disabled and you can tape good quality.

All DVD disc has macrovision 1 and 2 built in,
so direct recording to Tape is tough.
Unless you buy the black box that defect both type 1 and 2.
Alternatively, rip and make SVCD, then record SVCD to tape.
I transfer this way to 8mm, so my kid can watch movie on the
camcorder. -
Many times it is cheaper to get an Apex-1500 ($69) DVD player and use the macrovision/region hack (free) than to buy some black box that defeats macrovision.
