  1. I am using the Smartripper --> DVD2AVI --> TMPGEnc method of ripping. I am having trouble maintaining the aspect ration of 'letterboxed' files. My end *.mpg files are stretched vertically.

I have played around with the TMPGEnc settings but with no luck!

    Any suggestions would be appreciated!

    thanx,

Ok, how about trying this v12:
under "Advanced" tab, locate the "Image Position" field box and select 'Full Screen'

or with v12d or others it might be:
under "Advanced" tab, locate the "Video arrange Method" field box and select 'Full Screen'
this usually works when I'm exploring different posibilities.
NOTE: I've never done a comple rip/encode of any move.

Let us know if it worked - It would be nice to know.

    Have a good day!

  4. When you rip, then convert with the DVD2AVI, notice what the aspect ratio is. DVD2AVI lists it at the top of the statistics page while it's processing the file. Noting this, then using it as the "source aspect ratio" will give you a really good result.

  5. there's 2 things u need to do to fix the problem....both of them involve settings under the configure->advanced tab in tempgenc

    1) when u make the .d2v project file in dvd2avi...look at what aspect ratio dvd2avi tells you your dvd rip is (either 16:9 or 4:3)...under source aspect ratio under advanced tab in tempgenc...enter the correct source aspect ratio (16:9 or 4:3) depending on what dvd2avi tells you (usually it'll be 525 line NTSC if you ripped from region 1 dvd)

note: dvd2avi may not always be reliable in telling you the source apsect ratio (i.e. dvd2avi told me widescreen version of carrie 2: the rage was 4:3 when it was really 16:9) but 99% of the time dvd2avi will tell you correct aspect ratio

2)again, under advanced tab in tempgenc look for option to change "image positioning method"...set that to "fit to frame (preserve aspect ratio"
