Hey all. I know SVCD is 480x480, but if I capture avi at 480x480 and convert to mpeg2 for SVCD, would the quality be the same as if I captured at 720x480, then converted to 480x480 mpeg2? Logic says yes, but then there are probably other factors. Any advice appreciated!

It will depend on the quality of your source. If you're recording from a DVD player, then yes, capture at 720x480 will give you slightly better video after encoding to SVCD. If you capture from VHS video tape, then you will most likely not see any difference. Also, to see the gain in video quality, you need to let the mpeg encoder do the resizing, don't do it in advance with Vdub.

Capturing TV or VHS at 352x480 will capture all the information you need. DVDs of course require a 720x480 resolution.
