    Many free players will play the individual files, but to go full featured -- menus, etc -- the only options are paid.

    Check out TMT, PowerDVD and WinDVD

    Even if it's physically on a DVD disk, AVCHD contains Blu Ray structure and resolution, so you need a Blu Ray player to play them. It's like trying to play a DVD on an audio CD player -- won't work.
