Need to add IEEE 1394/Firewire to AMD F2 APU mb (Asus F2A85V-Pro). At one time TI was preferred, but now seeing most cards have via; make any difference these days? Will be using for Sony camcorder xfer only.

Chances are that a VIA-based adapter will work, but I have read some reviews where the buyer found out the hard way that a TI-based adapter was needed for the particular Firewire device they owned. It is doubtful that you will be able to find out that you must use a TI-based adapter without trying a VIA-based adapter first, but since most of the VIA-based adapters are inexpensive, so you don't have much to loose by trying one.

I have an older HP mb with a VIA chip that worked with W7 64, at least for a short test. Have found some TI chip cards, but without user reviews from known vendors (NewEgg/Amazon/B&H/etc) or from an unknown vendor or expensive. Most of the reported user problems that I've found are non-capture, mostly audio useage, and appear to be dated. One problem that I saw reported was a supposedly known incompatibility with a GeForce vid card (may or may not be true); the APU has its own quirks which I've found are not compatible with the versions of a couple of programs that I have (ArcSoft Theatre that came with HD-PVR and old version of TurboCAD). So just hoping someone has captured Sony Hi8 with VIA - particularly with an APU based box.

Your chances of getting a the kind of reply you want are slim. As a frequent poster here, I can tell you that most of the active members of this website have an Intel CPU of some kind, and not an AMD APU.
You have a choice to make, gamble $13-$20 that a VIA chipset card with lots of good reviews will work for you or spend $43 or more on a TI chipset card like this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16800998059 with no reviews but the preferred chipset. -
I'm familiar with horror stories about VIA drivers, but the SATA cards I've used in the past have been fairly trouble-free (in non-RAID setups).
