  1. Hi - I have a new Dell PC with no firewire port, and an ADVC-100 I'd like to hook up to it. It's running windows 7 and I have Nero 9. I recently purchased one of those little firewire to USB adapters in the hopes I could plug and play, but it doesn't show up in Nero as a capture device option. I'm going from DV I/O to Firewire IEEE 1394 6 Pin Female to USB Type Male Adaptor. I'm not especially tech-savy - any help/ideas would be really appreciated. Thanks!

  2. Give up on that. Those adapters are for hard drives, not video streaming/capture. You can get a firewire card for about US$10.

I agree. Those weren't built with DMA nor the specific DV stream protocol in mind. Get a Firewire card (preferably one with a TI controller chip) and be done with it.

There are 2 types of FireWire. You need FireWire 400. Also, FireWire cards can have a either PCI interface or a PCIe X1 interface, so you need to find out which one you need before ordering. You will have to open up the PC and look to see what expansion slots are available on the motherboard. These days you can't count on a Dell PC to have any more than one available expansion slot.

The best thing you can get would be a PCI-E FireWire 400 card with a Texas Instruments chip.
For the nth time, with the possible exception of certain Intel processors, I don't have/ever owned anything whose name starts with "i".
